From Maiden to Mother: Why a Mother Blessing is the Rite of Passage You Deserve

In our modern world, we have become very good at celebrating the arrival of a baby.
We host baby showers filled with blue or pink balloons, plastic games, and piles of tiny baby grows. But somewhere along the line, we forgot to celebrate the person at the heart of this transition.

Whether you are stepping into motherhood for the first time or becoming a mother anew, you are standing at the edge of a profound rite of passage – a transition that shifts your identity and completely turns your world around.

I believe this transition deserves more than just a party; it deserves a ceremony showering the mother in all her glory, not the baby (don’t worry, I don’t hate babies – they benefit from this too!).

For my firstborn, I was truly blessed to be gifted a Mother Blessing by my girlfriends and it was by far the most powerful ceremony I could have wished for.
I left that day overflowing with love, feminine power and confidence. Even women in my lineage who lived back in my home country, Argentina, had been a part of it through letters written to my baby, about their relationship with me (I can tell you, a lot of tears were cried that day!).

The Ancient Roots: The Navajo Blessingway

The concept of a Mother Blessing is inspired by the sacred Blessingway (or Hózhóójí) ceremony of the Navajo (Diné) people. I am conscious about not using this term as I am a firm believer in the act of culture appropriation and it is not something that I want to contribute to. So although my mother blessings are inspired by Blessingways – I will not be calling them so.

To the Navajo, the Blessingway is not just for birth; it is a complex and beautiful ritual used to ensure good luck, health, and harmony at any major life transition. When performed for a pregnant woman, its purpose is to spiritually “arm” her with strength and beauty, surrounding her with a “mountain of songs” and prayers to protect her as she journeys toward birth.

While we use the term “Mother Blessing” to remain respectful of the specific spiritual heritage of the Navajo people, we carry forward the core intention of their ancient tradition: the belief that a woman in transition should not walk alone. She should be held, uplifted, and reminded of her own innate power by the women who love her.

More Than a Baby Shower

Put quite simply, a baby shower in most parts, focus on showering the baby with gifts – the focus is on the baby. Whereas a Mother Blessing, I believe, is a way to shower the mother, to ensure she feels held and empowered in her upcoming journey.

It is a sacred, woman-centred space where your “village” i.e. your closest friends, sisters, and mentors – gather to focus entirely on you. There is no pressure to “perform” or entertain. Instead, the goal is to fill your “emotional cup” so high that it overflows, giving you the mental and spiritual stamina you need for labour and the postnatal period.

Side note: I make this very clear when hosting a Mother Blessing for women – your village is not someone who you feel you have to invite otherwise they will get upset – it’s not your brother’s girlfriend who you don’t really know, or your auntie you only see at family events and have no fond memories of. Your village are truly the people that will bring bundles of love to you, your protectors, your guides, your soul sisters… THAT is the energy you want and need on your day.

What Does a Pachamama Mother Blessing Look Like?

Every ceremony is unique and tailored to what feels right for you, but we often weave together beautiful, tactile rituals that create lasting memories, a few examples could be:

  • The Flower Crown: We build a crown of seasonal blooms to adorn you, symbolising your beauty and the blossoming of new life.
  • The Red Rope Ceremony: A single red thread is wound around the wrists of everyone in the circle, physically connecting the group.
  • Bump Painting & Pampering: A chance to honour your changing body through art and gentle touch, helping you feel grounded and cherished.
  • Letters to baby: A way to document how important your relationship is with the mother to be – a keepsake that will last forever.

Honouring the Journey

Becoming a mother is a metamorphosis. It is the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. By choosing a Mother Blessing, you are claiming your right to be seen, heard, and supported. You are acknowledging that while the baby is a gift, the mother too needs to be held at this transformational time.

If you are located in Crawley, East Grinstead, Horsham, Redhill, Haywards Heath or the surrounding areas and feel called to honour your journey with a ceremony, I would be privileged to hold that space for you.
