What does a Doula actually do? (And why you deserve to be held during birth & postpartum)
There is a lot of noise in the birth world today. Between conflicting social media advice, endless baby lists, and differing opinions from every corner, preparing to bring new life into the world can sometimes feel overwhelming rather than empowering.
I am not here to add to that noise.
As a birth and postpartum doula, my role isn’t to tell you how you should birth or parent. My role is to support you and encourage you to tune into your mothers instinct.
I am here to anchor you, protect your space, and offer unbiased, evidence-based information so that you feel truly confident, supported, and capable of making informed choices for your body and your baby.
If you’ve been wondering what a doula actually does – and how having one by your side can transform your experience – here is an honest look at how I support families through pregnancy, birth, and the fourth trimester.
1. Holding space in pregnancy: Preparing with clarity, not fear
A huge part of doula care happens long before labour begins. During pregnancy, we build a foundation of trust, connection, and deep preparation.
- Navigating Informed Choices: Every birthing body is unique, and so is every birth plan. Whether you are planning a home birth, a hospital birth, a gentle caesarean, or are completely undecided, I help you explore your options. We will look at A, B, and C scenario designs so you feel calm and adaptable no matter what path your birth takes.
- Unblocking Fears & Biomechanics: Together, we work through any fears or past experiences holding you back. Using practical tools – like movement, how we hold ourselves in pregnancy, birthing biomechanics, and calming relaxation techniques – we prepare both your mind and body for birth.
- Involving Your Partner: A doula never replaces a birth partner; rather, I hold space for them, too. I teach partners practical comfort measures and guidance so they feel empowered and confident in their role.
2. Unwavering support during birth: A continuous, calming presence
On your birthing day, medical teams and shift changes will come and go – but your doula stays with you continuously. I will be that familiar and safe face that will enter your space.
I work in gentle collaboration with midwives and healthcare providers, helping to facilitate unity and alignment in the room while ensuring your environment feels quiet, safe, and sacred.
- Emotional & Physical Comfort: From breathwork cues and gentle hip squeezes to holding your hand, encouraging water intake, or simply maintaining a serene atmosphere with soft lighting and reassuring words, I adapt completely to what you need in each moment.
- Advocacy & Agency: Birth is dynamic. When decisions arise, I help slow down the room so you have the time and clarity to ask questions, consider your feelings, and make informed choices aligned with your values.
- Your partners ticket to rest: Birth can be long, and as much as your partner will want to be there for you, there is only so much they can do before they start to flag. I often find myself tag teaming with the birth partner, so that they also get the rest they need!
3. Postpartum care: Honouring your matrescence
We spend months preparing for the birth of a baby, but so often, the birth of the mother -a process known as matrescence – gets overlooked. The fourth trimester can be a time of deep beauty, but also intense vulnerability and isolation. Mothers, too, need to be held.
As a postpartum doula and Mindful Breastfeeding Practitioner, my focus is protecting your peace while you heal, rest, and bond with your newborn. Postpartum care is flexible and tailored to your household, often including:
- Gentle Infant Feeding Support: Unbiased, evidence-based feeding support – whether you are breastfeeding, bottle feeding, or combi-feeding – blended with mindfulness to keep feeding times calm and relaxing for both you and baby.
- Nourishment for Body & Soul: Preparing warm, healing postpartum foods, herbal teas, or setting up a restful environment so you can physically recover.
- Practical & Emotional Care: Taking care of your baby while you take a soothing shower or nap, helping with light tidying, or simply sitting with you over a hot cuppa to debrief your birth story without judgement.
- Closing of the bones: A sacred ceremony I offer in which we close down the energies, honour your journey and you get that all important time to truly release and be dedicated to your healing.
All Birth is Beautiful
Whether you are welcoming your first baby or navigating the shift from one child to two, you deserve to feel seen, heard, and deeply nurtured. There is no “right” way to give birth or parent – there is only your way, and having unconditional, continuous support makes a world of difference.
